You’ve been searching for relief, chasing solutions, and exhausting every option – yet the cure has been closer than you realise.

No travel. No waiting lists. No intermediaries. The strongest treatment available begins where you are, with your own voice, reciting the Words of Allah.

Ruqyah is not folklore or a personal technique. It is seeking a cure through the Qur’an: the verses Allah revealed, His Names and Attributes, and the authentic supplications of the Prophet ﷺ. It is a means of healing for physical illness, anxiety, unseen attacks and afflictions by Jinn, magic, the evil eye – you name it – whatever you are facing.

So this guide walks you through everything. But there’s a cold truth you should know first:

Recitation alone will not save you. Without the right foundations, the cure will not remain permanent. Let’s fix that step by step.

Can You Combine Ruqyah with Medical Treatment?

Yes, absolutely.

Allah called the Qur’an a cure. Medical treatment is a means, not the cure itself.

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged us to take medicine, as long as it doesn’t involve anything prohibited. Your treatment plan should include Ruqyah, preferably some natural medicine mentioned in the Sunnah if required, and you can also consider medical treatment after weighing its benefits and harms.

However, know that the benefit of Ruqyah will forever be greater than medical treatment; it has no side effects, no toxicity, no aftermath, no dependency, no regret, no hidden consequences, and no spiritual cost. The Qur’an has nothing but benefit for the believer.

However, the Qur’an is not a Shifa and Rahmah for everyone. That is only for the believers. As for the oppressors, it does not increase them except in loss.

Seven Non-Negotiables That Make or Break Ruqyah

Think of these as the soil beneath everything you do. If the soil is sound, the seed takes root and grows. If it is corrupted, nothing will grow – no matter how much effort and water you pour into it.

You are not perfect, and you were never expected to be. But understand this: without these foundations, your Ruqyah will remain weak and unstable. With them in place, it becomes firm, effective, and transformative – far beyond what you expect.

1. Rectify Your Beliefs or Everything Crumbles

This is where it all starts. This is how it all started. This is the greatest obligation upon mankind.

For nearly thirteen years in Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ did not start with secondary issues or techniques. He focused relentlessly on one truth:

لا إله إلا الله – There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.

Why? Because if this foundation is shaky, everything that stands upon it collapses.

A lot of people come looking for cures whilst carrying beliefs that have nothing to do with Islam. They don’t really know who Allah is. They practise doing things the Prophet ﷺ never taught, and his Companions never touched – all while wondering why nothing is improving.

Fix this first. Nothing moves forward until you do.

Allah makes a promise in the Qur’an:

الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَمْ يَلْبِسُوا إِيمَانَهُم بِظُلْمٍ أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمُ الْأَمْنُ وَهُم مُّهْتَدُونَ

They who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice – those will have security, and they are [rightly] guided. [Surah Al-An’am 6:82]

Safety. Security. Guidance. All of it is granted when belief is pure.

Look at Yunus عليه السلام, sealed inside the belly of the whale – layers of darkness, no escape, no human solution, no visible hope. If anyone had a reason to despair, it was him.

What’s the first thing he says?

There is no deity worthy of worship except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the oppressors. [Surah Al-Anbiya 21:87]

No cure before Tawheed. No relief before submission. No rescue before belief.

And Allah’s response?

So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers. [Surah Al-Anbiya 21:88]

That is not just a story. That is a pattern. That is a promise, from Allah Himself.

So fix your belief – or nothing else will hold.

A must-read book, highly recommended for rectifying and purifying one’s ‘Aqeedah from Shirk and Kufr, is the uncompromising work Kitab At-Tawheed by Shaykh Al-Islam Muhammad ibn Abd Al-Wahhaab.

2. Adhere Firmly to the Sunnah or Don’t Expect Results

Allah says:

And let those who oppose his (Prophet’s ﷺ) commandment beware, lest some Fitnah befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them. [Surah An-Nur 24:63]

Going against the Sunnah brings harm, and it is one of the main reasons people remain stuck despite sincere effort.

Many people recite certain phrases 11 times, 111 times, or at specific times without any clear evidence – while often well-intentioned, actions without proof carry no weight in worship.

This principle was made unmistakably clear by ‘Aishah رضي الله عنها, who narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِي أَمْرِنَا هٰذَا مَا لَيْسَ مِنْهُ فَهُوَ رَدٌّ

“Whoever introduces into this matter of ours that which does not belong to it, it is rejected.”
[Sahih al-Bukhari 2697]

In another wording:

“Whoever performs an action that is not in accordance with our affair, it is rejected.”
[Sahih Muslim 1718]

Proof is straightforward: Allah said it in the Qur’an, or the Prophet ﷺ said it in an authentic narration. Everything else is personal opinion, habit, or assumption.

If the Prophet ﷺ specified a number, then follow it. If he did not, do not invent one. Worship is not built on creativity, but on submission.

The only path to success is adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. When results do not come immediately, the problem is never the method – it is usually the patience.

3. Repent or Remain Afflicted

Sins are among the greatest causes of hardship, and relief often comes through sincere repentance. In countless cases, sincere Tawbah alone has been the turning point that lifted the affliction – even after it had persisted for years.

Tawbah and Istighfaar matter. A lot.

Sincere Tawbah (توبةً نصوحًا) is a decisive return to Allah that includes:

  • Regretting what you did
  • Stopping it right now
  • Having firm resolve you won’t go back
  • If you wronged someone, making it right

Istighfaar is lighter than Tawbah and remains open even when the conditions of Tawbah have not yet been fully met. Perhaps the regret has not settled in as it should, or the sin has not yet been completely abandoned as it should – this does not prevent a person from making Istighfaar.

Istighfaar is asking Allah to cover the sin and to shield a person from its consequences.

Allah says:

And Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness. [Surah Al-Anfaal: 8:33]

And the Prophet ﷺ said:

مَنْ لَزِمَ الاِسْتِغْفَارَ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لَهُ مِنْ كُلِّ ضِيقٍ مَخْرَجًا وَمِنْ كُلِّ هَمٍّ فَرَجًا وَرَزَقَهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لاَ يَحْتَسِبُ

“Whoever constantly seeks forgiveness, Allah will make for him a way out of every distress, a relief from every anxiety, and provide for him from where he does not expect.” [Sunan Abi Dawud 1518]

So be honest with yourself. What sins are blocking your cure? Look hard enough, and you’ll find plenty.

Tawbah is one of the fastest ways to gain a cure. Don’t skip it. Ever.

4. Solidify Your Taqwa or Stand Defenceless

Taqwa means putting a shield between yourself and Allah’s anger, His punishment, the Hellfire.

A clear and comprehensive definition of Taqwa is the one given by Talq ibn Habib

“Acting in obedience to Allah upon a light (of guidance) from Allah, hoping for the reward of Allah; and abandoning disobedience to Allah upon a light (of guidance) from Allah, fearing the punishment of Allah.” [Hilyat al-Awliya wa Tabaqat al-Asfiya 3/64]

Do as much as you can to obey Him sincerely and according to the Sunnah. Avoid disobedience as much as possible.

Allah says:

And have Taqwa of Allah, and Allah will teach you. [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:282]

He’ll show you where your cure is. He’ll teach you how to fix your problem. He’ll guide you to the way out.

And whoever has Taqwa of Allah, He will make for him a way out. [Surah At-Talaq 65:2]

A way out when you thought there was none. Taqwa is a process. It’s not one thing you do once.

Fix your obligatory prayers. Stop delaying them. Once that’s solid, add the Sunnah elements. Then add voluntary prayers.

Do the same with everything else. How you treat your parents. Your spouse. Your kids. How you behave at work. Whether your income is Halal or Haram.

Allah says:

Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve – those who believed and were fearing Allah. [Surah Yunus: 10:62-63]

When you have the correct belief and Taqwa, you become from the Awliya of Allah – those close to Him. When they ask Him, He answers.

So many people want cures but won’t change anything. Won’t pray properly. Won’t dress properly. Won’t quit their Haram income. Then ask, “Why isn’t Allah curing me?”

Taqwa is the missing piece of the puzzle.

5. Make Du‘aa with Certainty or Waste Your Words

Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

ادْعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَنْتُمْ مُوقِنُونَ بِالإِجَابَةِ

Call upon Allah while being certain of being answered. [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3479]

Du‘aa without certainty is noise. Words without conviction. Raised hands with empty hearts.

People travel across countries, chase healers, and exhaust every door – while the greatest door remains unopened. If they raised their hands to Allah properly, with true yaqīn, He would answer them in their own homes.

Let Du’aa become constant, not occasional. Ask Allah repeatedly, persistently, relentlessly – because Allah does not tire of answering, but people tire of asking.

And seek out the authentic supplications of the Prophet ﷺ – Du’aas forged in revelation, perfectly suited for fear, pain, illness, and hardship.

If your Du’aa is weak, your expectation is weak.

And if your expectation is weak, do not expect results.

6. Be Patient or Ruin the Cure

What blessing could be greater, more pleasing, or more comforting and soothing to the heart than the certainty that Allah is with the patient?

As Allah said:

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient. [Surah Al-Baqarah: 2:153]

Be patient in doing good deeds. Pick up the Mushaf, recite your Ruqyah, open Hisnul Muslim, recite its supplications, persevere and do not quit, ever.

Be patient in avoiding sins. Don’t say, “I got desperate, so I went to a magician.” Stay patient. Stay away from Haram. And unquestionably, Allah will not let your sincere efforts go uncompensated.

Be patient with what Allah has decreed. What you resent today may be the very means by which Allah saves you. What appears harmful now may be Allah’s protection in disguise.

But perhaps you hate a thing, and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing, and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not. [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:216]

7. Act and Trust Allah or Stay Where You Are

Take every practical step required for your Ruqyah to succeed, then leave what you cannot control to Allah. Ruqyah does not work with passivity. Many complain that the affliction remains, the symptoms persist, or the relief is slow – but have they truly taken the means?

Have they been consistent in recitation? Have they corrected their beliefs, cleaned their homes, abandoned sin, and disciplined their routine? Or are they waiting for relief without effort?

Recite daily. Maintain your treatment. Remove what blocks healing. Apply the Sunnah properly and persist without interruption – then place your trust in Allah and wait with certainty.

And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him]. [Surah Aale Imran 3:159]

This is true Tawakkul in Ruqyah: doing everything required in one’s decisive power for the cure, then relying upon Allah for the outcome. Not abandoning effort, and not doubting His decree even for the fraction of a second.

How to Perform Self-Ruqyah

First things first: Ruqyah means you recite the Qur’an yourself. Not playing audio recordings.

Audio can be a supplement. Listen in your earphones, fine. But it doesn’t count as actual treatment.

Listening to recordings is not Ruqyah. It is ‘Ibaadah, it is from the Sunnah, and it carries immense reward when done with reflection and presence of heart – but it is not Ruqyah. So with that distinction firmly understood, we can move forward correctly.

The Core Recitation

Purify your intention. Ask Allah for help.

In general, the more a person recites, the greater the benefit. However, there is little benefit in starting with around three hours a day only to burn out and then stop altogether. Consistency matters more than intensity.

For that reason, we will aim for at least 45 minutes of continuous recitation every day. Is 45 minutes itself from the Sunnah? No – the duration is not. However, the actions carried out within it are. It is simply a practical guideline that allows a person to perform Ruqyah on themselves consistently and effectively.

It strikes a balance. Three hours is unrealistic for most people, and ten minutes is usually insufficient – not due to any deficiency in the Qur’an or its unfathomable power, but because of the lack of Barakah in our time. Forty-five minutes is workable, sustainable, and effective.

Although the entire Qur’an is Shifa, we will focus, within the 45 minutes, on the Surahs that are explicitly mentioned in the revelation as being especially effective against afflictions from the unseen.

  • Surah Al-Fatihah
  • Surah al-Baqarah – ideally, recite the entire Surah, or as much of it as is easy for you to recite, especially in cases of suspected Sihr (Magic). If recited in full, it will naturally take longer than 45 minutes. If a person is unable to recite Surah al-Baqarah in full, then at the very least they should focus on the portions of the Surah that have been given greater virtue than the rest – such as Ayatul Kursi and the last two Ayat.
  • Surah Al-Kafirun (As it has come in some narrations)
  • Surah Al-Ikhlas
  • Surah Al-Falaq
  • Surah An-Nas
  • An essential Du’aa:

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ، اشْفِهِ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

O Allah, Lord of the people, remove the harm and cure him (the patient), for You are the Curer. There is no cure except Your cure – a cure that leaves behind no illness. [Sahih Bukhari 5743]

How to Do It

All of the above may be recited once, three times, or seven times, in line with what has been narrated from the Sunnah and the practice of the Companions. You may also recite more than this if you wish. However, avoid fixing a specific number permanently, as there is no evidence for doing so.

Blow into your hands whenever you choose – lightly and with or without saliva – and wipe them over your body. You may blow after every verse, every Surah, or after completing a page; all of this is permissible within the bounds of the Sunnah.

Pay special attention to areas of pain. If there is discomfort, direct your recitation and blowing toward that area. You may also gently massage the area while reciting.

Together, these practices should comfortably fill or exceed your 45 minutes of Ruqyah.

Important Disclaimer: If you do not notice any progress after consistently performing 45 minutes of Ruqyah, such that the affliction shows no signs of weakening, then increase both the duration and amount of your recitation. At the same time, focus on improving its quality by reciting the Qur’an more proficiently, reflecting upon the meanings of the Ayat, refining your Tajweed, abandoning sins, and increasing your knowledge of the Qur’anic sciences.

The 7-Day Ruqyah Programme

Use this as a supplement to your regular Ruqyah – not as a replacement for it.

What You Need

Oil: Extra virgin, cold-pressed olive oil.

Water: Zamzam is preferred. If not available, use clean drinking water.

Honey: Get it from a trusted source, ensuring authentic quality.

Black seed: Black seed (Habbat al-Barakah) as is widely available.

The Method of Reciting Over Oil and Water

Pour the oil and water into two separate bottles. Grab the bottle of oil with your hand, place the opening close to your mouth, and recite Surah Al-Fatihah. After you finish, blow (dry-spit) into the container several times.

Now grab the bottle of water, blow into it in the same manner, and begin reciting Surah Al-Fatihah. Continue this to complete the recitation of Al-Fatihah seven times.

As part of the programme, Surah Al-Baqarah is also read on the oil and water: the entirety of the Surah. When you reach Ayat al-Kursi, recite it seven times.

Recite Surahs Al-Kafirun, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas as well. Al-Kafirun can be read three times whilst the rest seven times each.

You may recite each Surah or verse 1, 3, or 7 times each. If you choose to read more or less than that, then the Sunnah is not to keep count.

How to Use the Oil and Water

Once your bottles of oil and water have been recited on, begin the programme:

At Night: Apply the oil to your skin before bed. Rub it all over your skin, from head to toe, like you would apply moisturiser. If you can’t cover your entire skin, do what’s easy for you.

In the Morning: Pour a cup of the water you recited over, and pour it on the back of your neck, letting the water flow behind your back. Take a shower to remove the oil you applied the previous night.

During the Day: Mix a cup full of the water you recited over with 2 tablespoons of honey and an odd number of black seeds, or any number. Do this 3 times throughout the day.

Duration

You may apply this method of Ruqyah for 7 days, as the name suggests. Some people do it continuously every day. Others may choose to do it one week out of the month, depending on their need and situation.

You may experience symptoms such as aches, pains, and fatigue. After that, you’ll begin to feel better Bi-idhnillah.

Hijamah (Cupping)

Regular cupping (Hijamah) sessions can be highly beneficial as part of the treatment process. Make sure you seek someone reliable, knowledgeable, and professional, and allow them to determine the appropriate areas, timing, and frequency based on your condition.

Hijamah is often especially helpful toward the later stages of treatment – when the affliction feels weakened but has not fully cleared – as it can assist in removing what remains and bringing the process to completion, by the permission of Allah.

Final Reflections

The Qur’an is the Speech of Allah. It’s more powerful than any mountain, any illness, any magic, any Jinn.

Allah says:

“If We had sent down this Qur’an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and splitting from fear of Allah.” [Surah Al-Hashr 59:21]

And if there was any Qur’an by which the mountains would be removed or the earth would be broken apart or the dead would be made to speak, it would be this Qur’an, but to Allah belongs the affair entirely. [Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:31]

If you recite it with sincerity, with firm belief, with patience, and in accordance with the Sunnah, it will never fail you.

Don’t limit the Qur’an to spiritual ailments. Use it for headaches, for fevers, for chronic pain, for anxiety. Use it for everything.

Don’t wait for dramatic reactions. Most people will simply feel peace, then gradual healing.

Don’t abandon the Qur’an when the cure is being delayed. That delay is a test of your Iman.

And don’t ever believe that any illness is stronger than the Words of the One who created the heavens and the earth.

Start today. Recite. Persist. Never let go.
